This paper uses oceanographic data from coastal areas of the northwest Pacific to demonstrate that anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition from rapidly developing regions of Asia is shifting the biogeochemical balance of N and phosphorus (P) over major areas of the ocean. This is likely to promote P limitation of phytoplankton production and shift other aspects of ecosystem structure and function. The study adds important data to previous findings from terrestrial and freshwater studies of the effects of human-derived N on global ecosystems, indicating that even major expanses of oceanic waters are impacted.
